H.F. Securities hf. was established on December 16th, 2003 and received its operating license in February 2004. Initially, the firm’s activities primarily involved the handling of off-market transactions in shares between institutional clients. In the fall of 2004, the firm was assigned the management of the primary capital market of Reykjavik Savings Bank (SPRON), which was established at that time. In September 2006, following membership to the Icelandic Stock Exchange, the firm began dealing in bonds in addition to shares. In January 2007, the firm became the first financial undertaking to offer its clients Direct Market Access to the Icelandic Stock Exchange. In March 2007, the firm received a license to operate as a securities undertaking.
The firm does not trade on its own account, nor do its employees engage in personal securities transactions.
The firm provides services solely to institutional investors.
The founder and managing director is Halldór Friðrik Thorsteinsson, who holds a cand. oecon. degree from the University of Iceland and a BA in Philosophy from the same school. He began working at the securities brokerage arm of Kaupthing in 1994, became a licensed broker in Iceland in 1998 and in New York in 2000. From 1998, he worked as a private banking consultant for Kaupthing S.A. in Luxembourg, until he founded Kaupthing Securities Inc. on behalf of Kaupthing in New York in 2000, acting as its managing director until 2003.
